Creating an agent in a SharePoint site

If you’ve ever thought, “I wish this SharePoint site could just answer questions for people”—good news. Now it can.
Microsoft has introduced a cool new feature (currently rolling out) that lets you create a custom Copilot agent directly from a SharePoint page. No jumping into another app, no fancy setup. You just click a button and boom—your site gets its own little AI helper.
Here’s what it is, how it works, and why you should totally try it.
So… What’s a SharePoint Agent?
Basically, it’s like adding a smart assistant to your site. This agent can read the content on your page and help people find answers, navigate your site, or even automate simple tasks.
For example, someone could ask:
- “Where’s the latest PTO policy?”
- “How do I request equipment?”
- “What’s the Wi-Fi password again?”
And instead of digging through links, the agent just answers. Like magic—but practical.
Why This Is a Big Deal
Instant help – Your users get quick answers without hunting through documents.
Smart and personalized – The agent uses your actual page content to power its responses.
No coding required – Anyone with basic SharePoint access can do this.
Saves time – Less time answering FAQs means more time doing the stuff that matters.
Whether you’re running an HR hub, a project site, or a team portal, this feature is a game-changer.
How to Create a SharePoint Agent from a Page
1. Pick a Page to Start From
Head to your SharePoint site and pick a page that has useful content—like an FAQ, how-to guide, or policy center. The page that you select should be the homepage of your site collection.
2. Click “Agent”
Select the New dropdown and select Agent.

3. Let the Magic Happen
SharePoint will scan the page and set up a base agent using Microsoft Copilot Studio. The agent will know what’s on your page—and use that info to answer questions.

4. Customize the Agent
From there, you can jump into Copilot Studio to:
- Add or edit Q&A topics
- Adjust the welcome message
- Train the agent with common questions
- Connect it to other tools (like SharePoint lists or Power Automate flows)

5. Go to a document library or a page within your site
Once it’s ready, just embed it back on your SharePoint page using the Copilot web part. Now, when someone visits your site, they’ll see your helpful little agent ready to chat.

Select a document(s) from the library and then ask a question regarding them in the agent in the right panel.

Quick Tips for a Great Agent
Clean up your page content first – Clear sections and headings help the agent understand things better. Make sure you have used accessibility capabilities so that the agent can understand content on the page that may be within images and not text directly on the page.
Think like your users – What would they ask? Add those questions.
Keep improving it – You can continue to edit and work with your agent to make it evolve and continue to get better.
Wrapping It Up
Creating a SharePoint agent from a page is one of the easiest ways to make your site smarter, friendlier, and way more helpful. No need to be a developer. No need to rebuild your site. Just choose a page, click a button, and let AI do the rest.
And honestly? It’s kind of fun to see your SharePoint page come to life like that.
